Rabies, MMR and food risks deserve a proper check

For many UK travellers, Morocco feels close and familiar enough to underestimate. The health preparation is not usually complicated, but it is not empty either. Rabies is present in domestic animals, measles protection needs checking, and food and water infections still catch people out. At Allcures - Hassengate Travel Clinic in Stanford-le-Hope, we can run through your route, dates and vaccination history before you go, so the advice fits the trip you have actually booked.

City breaks, family visits and Atlas routes create different risks

Morocco trips vary a lot. A long weekend in Marrakech or Casablanca is a different health conversation from visiting relatives, travelling with children, hiring a car through rural areas, or walking in the High Atlas. Resort stays can be lower risk, but they do not remove the need to check routine jabs or think about food hygiene. Family visits often mean more local eating, more animal contact, and longer stays in residential areas. Trekking changes the picture again, especially around altitude, sun exposure, minor injuries and access to care. If your plans include Mount Toubkal or sleeping above 2,500 metres, altitude illness becomes part of the discussion, not an afterthought.

The Morocco risk people often miss is animal contact

Rabies is a real consideration in Morocco because it has been reported in domestic animals. Most short-stay travellers will not need rabies vaccination automatically, but it is worth discussing if you are taking children, cycling or running, staying for more than a month, working with animals, or heading somewhere where post-bite treatment could be difficult to reach. Any bite, scratch or lick on broken skin from a dog, cat, bat or other mammal needs urgent medical advice, even if you were vaccinated before travel. Hepatitis A is commonly recommended for previously unvaccinated travellers to Morocco because it spreads through contaminated food and water. Typhoid vaccination is also often considered, especially for longer trips, family visits, young children, or travel where food hygiene may be uncertain. Tetanus should be up to date, particularly if you may be walking, riding, trekking or travelling away from larger towns. MMR matters. Measles can spread easily, and Morocco has been flagged in travel health sources for measles activity, so adults and children should check they are protected according to the UK schedule. Hepatitis B may be relevant for longer stays, sexual exposure, medical or dental treatment abroad, contact sports, or work involving blood or body fluids. Malaria tablets are not usually the main issue for Morocco. Bites still matter, though. Insect and tick-borne infections occur in parts of North Africa, and sandfly bites can transmit leishmaniasis. Use repellent, cover skin at dusk and after dark, and take bite prevention seriously outside well-screened accommodation. Schistosomiasis has previously been reported, but the risk is very low; avoid swimming or wading in untreated freshwater.

Give yourself four to six weeks if you can

Book a travel consultation four to six weeks before departure where possible. That gives enough time to check your UK routine vaccines, discuss hepatitis A, typhoid, rabies and hepatitis B, and plan any course that needs more than one appointment. Coming later is still useful. A pharmacist can still assess risk, update some vaccines, and talk through practical steps for your itinerary. Bring your vaccine history if you have it, plus your route, length of stay, accommodation style and any medical conditions or regular medicines. For Morocco, the consultation should cover food and water precautions, animal bites, sun and heat, traveller’s diarrhoea, travel insurance, and altitude if you are heading into the High Atlas. If you are travelling from Tilbury or Grays, our clinic is local enough for a pre-travel appointment without a long detour.
