Cape Verde is not mainly a malaria conversation

For many Cape Verde trips, the bigger health issues are daytime mosquitoes, food and water hygiene, sun exposure and making sure routine vaccines are up to date. Malaria tablets are not normally the focus. At Allcures - Hassengate Travel Clinic in Stanford-Le-Hope, we can talk through your island, length of stay, accommodation and any planned activities, then advise which travel vaccinations and precautions are sensible before you fly.

Resort islands, family visits and longer stays carry different practical risks

Most UK travellers to Cape Verde head to Sal, Boa Vista, Santiago or São Vicente for winter sun, package holidays, work, family visits or longer stays away from the UK. A short hotel-based trip on Sal is usually a different health conversation from spending several weeks moving between islands, staying with relatives, working outdoors or visiting Praia on Santiago. The islands are not all the same. Tourist areas may feel very familiar, but food hygiene, medical access, insect exposure and heat can still catch people out. Children, pregnant travellers, older adults and anyone with diabetes, asthma, heart disease or a weakened immune system should plan a little earlier, especially if travel dates are close to school holidays or winter peak season.

Daytime mosquitoes matter more than malaria tablets for most Cape Verde trips

Cape Verde was declared malaria-free by the World Health Organization in 2024, and malaria prevention tablets are not usually advised for travellers. That does not make mosquito bites irrelevant. Dengue is reported in Cape Verde, and the mosquitoes that spread it often bite during the day, including around towns and resorts. Zika risk is also listed for Cape Verde, so pregnant travellers, partners of pregnant travellers and couples planning pregnancy should get individual advice before booking or travelling. Hepatitis A is commonly recommended for previously unvaccinated travellers because it spreads through contaminated food, water or close contact. Typhoid vaccination may also be considered, particularly for longer trips, independent travel, visiting friends and relatives, or eating in places where food hygiene is uncertain. Tetanus should be up to date, especially if you may be walking, cycling, doing water sports or staying somewhere with limited access to medical care. Hepatitis B is worth discussing for longer stays, new sexual partners, contact sports, healthcare work, tattoos, piercings or any chance you might need medical or dental treatment abroad. MMR matters too; measles risk is considered higher than in the UK, so children and adults with incomplete vaccination records should not ignore it. Rabies is not reported in Cape Verde, but bats may carry bat lyssavirus. Most holidaymakers are low risk, though caving, bat work or close animal contact changes the advice. Altitude is only relevant if your plans include high points such as Pico do Fogo, where rapid ascent can cause problems.

What to check four to six weeks before flying

Aim to book your travel health consultation four to six weeks before departure. If you are travelling sooner, still come in; some advice and vaccinations may still be useful, and it is better than leaving gaps unreviewed. Bring your itinerary, including islands, dates, accommodation type and any plans for hiking, water sports, volunteering or family visits. We will check your UK routine vaccines, discuss hepatitis A, typhoid and other relevant jabs, and talk through Zika, dengue bite avoidance and food hygiene. Pack a repellent suitable for daytime use, light clothing that covers skin when mosquitoes are active, high-factor sunscreen and any regular medicines in enough quantity for the whole trip. For food and drink, be cautious with buffet food that has been standing, unpeeled fruit, untreated water and ice of uncertain origin.
