Yellow Fever Vaccine (Stamaril)
Get the Yellow Fever vaccine (Stamaril) and a valid International Certificate (ICVP) the same day at South Essex's NaTHNaC-designated centre, Hassengate Pharmacy.
What is Yellow Fever and why does the vaccine matter?
Yellow Fever is a viral haemorrhagic fever transmitted by mosquitoes across tropical Africa and South America. WHO estimates 200,000 cases globally each year, with around 30,000 deaths. There is no specific treatment — supportive care only — and case fatality among those who develop severe disease can exceed 50%. Vaccination is the single most effective preventive measure and forms the basis of NaTHNaC's country-by-country recommendations.
The vaccine (Stamaril)
Stamaril is a live-attenuated single-dose vaccine that provides protective antibody response in over 95% of recipients within 10 days. Under WHO 2016 rules a single dose is valid for life, replacing the older 10-year revaccination requirement. We stock Stamaril on-site at Hassengate Pharmacy in Corringham.
Which countries make Yellow Fever a priority?
Yellow Fever vaccination is recommended for travellers entering YF-endemic countries in tropical Africa and South America. The ICVP is also commonly required as transit proof when arriving from endemic regions. Country pages with full risk and entry-requirement detail:
- Kenya travel vaccines and Yellow Fever
- Tanzania (Kilimanjaro, Serengeti, Zanzibar)
- Nigeria — required on entry
- Ghana — required for all travellers
- Brazil and the Amazon basin
- Peru — Amazon regions
The Yellow Fever certificate (ICVP)
Only NaTHNaC-designated centres can issue the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) — the WHO-recognised yellow booklet that proves vaccination. Hassengate Pharmacy is a designated centre. The certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination and is valid for life. For the full mechanics, see our Yellow Fever certificate (ICVP) explained guide.
Schedule, side effects and contraindications
Single dose, given subcutaneously or intramuscularly. Mild side effects (low-grade fever, headache, fatigue, injection-site soreness) affect 5–10% of recipients between days 5–10. Serious reactions (YEL-AND, YEL-AVD) are rare and concentrated in first-time recipients over 60. The vaccine is contraindicated in severe egg allergy, severe immunocompromise, thymus disorders, and infants under 6 months. We screen carefully and can issue a Letter of Medical Exemption recognised by border authorities for travellers who can't have the vaccine — see our travel vaccines in pregnancy guide for pregnancy-specific advice.
Cost and NHS comparison
Yellow Fever is private-only — never NHS-funded. For a plain-English breakdown of which travel vaccines are NHS-eligible and which are always private, see our NHS vs Private travel vaccines guide.
