Typhoid Vaccine
Typhoid (Typhim Vi) is recommended for travel to South Asia and other regions with elevated risk. Single jab gives 3 years of cover.
Typhoid fever: still a major risk in South Asia
Typhoid fever, caused by Salmonella Typhi bacteria, is a serious food and water-borne illness that remains common across South Asia, parts of Africa, and Latin America. UKHSA data consistently shows the vast majority of UK typhoid cases are imported, with a significant proportion in VFR (visiting friends and relatives) travellers. Symptoms include prolonged fever, severe abdominal pain, weakness, headache and either constipation or diarrhoea. Untreated mortality is around 15–20%; with prompt antibiotic treatment, under 1%.
Typhim Vi vaccine
Typhim Vi is a single-dose injection giving roughly 70% protection for 3 years. It's not 100% effective — strict food and water precautions ('boil it, cook it, peel it, or forget it') remain essential alongside vaccination. We stock Typhim Vi on-site and can vaccinate same-day with no GP referral needed.
Where do I need the typhoid vaccine?
South Asia is highest risk:
Also recommended for travel to most of Africa, parts of Latin America, the Middle East and South-East Asia including Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Combined options
Hepatyrix combines typhoid with Hepatitis A in a single injection, useful when both are needed. At consultation we'll review which option is most efficient for your trip.
Oral vs injectable
An oral version (Vivotif, 3 capsules over 5 days) is licensed in the UK but less commonly stocked. We use the injectable Typhim Vi as standard. Vivotif gives slightly longer protection (about 5 years) but compliance with the capsule schedule matters more for efficacy.
Family and VFR considerations
Children from age 2 can receive Typhim Vi. South Asian VFR families are particularly important to vaccinate fully — see our family travel vaccine checklist and children's travel vaccines guide.
NHS vs Private
Typhoid is NHS-eligible via your GP for travel to qualifying destinations, subject to availability. See our NHS vs Private travel vaccines guide.
