Rabies: the world's deadliest preventable disease
Rabies is almost universally fatal once symptoms appear. UK Government estimates 59,000 people die from rabies globally every year, mostly from dog bites in Asia and Africa. Treatment after exposure works only if started before symptoms develop — pre-exposure vaccination doesn't prevent infection if exposed but dramatically simplifies and shortens what's needed if you are bitten.
Rabipur and the pre-exposure schedule
Rabipur is the UK-licensed pre-exposure rabies vaccine. The standard schedule is 3 doses over 21–28 days (days 0, 7, 21–28). The UK Green Book also accepts an accelerated 2-dose schedule (days 0 and 7) for unvaccinated travellers, with a year-1 booster recommended for ongoing risk. After completion, pre-exposure cover lasts at least 10 years. For accelerated scheduling see our last-minute travel vaccines guide.
Why pre-exposure matters
If you're bitten by a potentially rabid animal in a high-risk country, post-exposure prophylaxis requires multiple injections of vaccine PLUS rabies immunoglobulin (RIG). RIG is unavailable in many parts of Africa and rural Asia. Pre-exposure vaccination means you'd only need 2 boost doses of vaccine — no RIG needed.
Where is rabies highest risk?
- India — leading source of rabies-exposure imports
- Thailand
- Indonesia (including Bali)
- Vietnam
- Cambodia
- Nepal
- Philippines
- Morocco
- Kenya
- Tanzania
- Nigeria
Who should consider pre-exposure?
- Long-stay travellers (3+ months) in high-risk countries
- Runners and cyclists (higher dog-encounter exposure)
- Children — see our children's travel vaccines guide
- Backpackers and gap-year travellers
- Vets, animal handlers and aid workers
- VFR travellers to South Asia and Africa
If you're bitten abroad
Wash the wound with soap and water immediately for at least 15 minutes. Apply iodine or alcohol disinfectant. Seek medical care urgently. Pre-exposure vaccinated travellers still need 2 doses of vaccine on days 0 and 3.
NHS vs Private
Rabies is private-only for travel purposes. See our NHS vs Private travel vaccines guide.
