Hepatitis B Vaccine
Hepatitis B (Engerix B) protects against blood-borne and sexually transmitted Hep B. Required for healthcare workers, recommended for long stays in Asia and Africa.
Hepatitis B: a blood-borne risk for long stays and higher-risk activities
Hepatitis B is a blood-borne viral infection that can cause chronic liver disease and is endemic in much of Asia, Africa, the Pacific Islands and parts of Eastern Europe and Latin America. Transmission is through blood, sexual contact, contaminated needles, body piercing and tattoo equipment, and medical or dental procedures abroad. UKHSA reports thousands of new diagnoses annually, with a meaningful proportion acquired abroad.
Engerix B vaccine and schedule options
The standard course is 3 doses at 0, 1 and 6 months. Accelerated schedules (0, 7, 21 days plus a 12-month booster) are available for travellers with imminent departure dates — see our last-minute travel vaccines guide. After completion, immunity is generally lifelong in healthy adults. We stock Engerix B and the combined Twinrix (Hep A+B) on-site.
Who needs the Hep B vaccine?
- Healthcare and dental workers travelling abroad
- Long-stay travellers (more than 3 months) in endemic countries
- Anyone planning medical or dental work abroad
- Travellers planning tattoos, piercings or acupuncture
- Backpackers and gap-year travellers
- VFR travellers to South Asia and Africa
Destinations where Hep B matters most
Endemic regions include most of Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, the Pacific Islands and parts of Eastern Europe and Latin America:
NHS vs Private
Hep B is free on the NHS for at-risk occupational groups but typically private for travellers. We can administer Hep B alongside any other private-only vaccines (Yellow Fever, Rabies) in one visit. See our NHS vs Private travel vaccines guide.
Side effects and pregnancy
Most common: mild soreness at the injection site. Serious reactions are rare. Safe in pregnancy. For pregnancy travel see our travel vaccines in pregnancy guide.
