Travel vaccinations in Stanford-le-Hope
Essex Clinics is the consumer-facing travel clinic operating from Hassengate Pharmacy on Southend Road in Corringham — the heart of the SS17 catchment and the closest NaTHNaC-designated Yellow Fever centre for the wider South Essex corridor. Stanford-le-Hope residents come to us for the practical mix of late opening hours seven days a week (Saturdays till 9pm, Tuesdays from 7am), same-day appointments routinely available, every travel vaccine in stock, and a working community pharmacy on-site rather than a same-as-everyone-else online consult model.
Most travellers we see fall into a few groups: family-visit travel to South Asia, East Africa and the Caribbean (typhoid, Hep A, sometimes Rabies awareness), Hajj and Umrah pilgrims needing Meningitis ACWY ahead of their visa, cruise travellers boarding at Tilbury, business and contract workers travelling at short notice, and family holidays to higher-risk destinations like Egypt, Thailand and Mexico.
Yellow Fever — what makes us a designated centre
Yellow Fever (vaccine: Stamaril) cannot be administered or certified by a regular GP practice. Only centres designated by NaTHNaC — the National Travel Health Network and Centre — can issue the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP), the WHO-recognised document required for entry to or transit through countries like Brazil, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Côte d'Ivoire, the Gambia and others. Hassengate Pharmacy holds NaTHNaC designation — see the full UK Yellow Fever vaccination centres register. Certificates are issued the same day, valid for life under WHO 2016 rules.
Vaccines in stock — Travel and routine schedules
We hold the full Green Book travel-vaccine inventory on-site. Travel-specific stock includes Yellow Fever (Stamaril), Hepatitis A (Avaxim/Havrix), Hepatitis B (Engerix B / Twinrix combined A+B), Typhoid (Typhim Vi), Rabies (Rabipur 3-dose pre-exposure schedule), Japanese Encephalitis (Ixiaro 2-dose), Meningitis ACWY (Nimenrix/Menveo) for Hajj and high-risk destinations, Cholera oral (Dukoral), Dengue (Qdenga), Chikungunya (Ixchiq), and Tick-borne Encephalitis (TicoVac). Routine boosters — Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio combined, MMR catch-up — are also administered as part of travel preparation when relevant. The full Green Book immunisation schedule is followed.
Malaria prevention — prescribed in the same appointment
Our pharmacist is a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber (Hassengate Pharmacy premises 1124245). That changes the workflow significantly: malaria tablets — Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil), Doxycycline, or Mefloquine (Lariam) — are prescribed and dispensed in the same visit, not via a separate GP appointment. The right regimen depends on destination (drug resistance varies — some West African areas have chloroquine and proguanil resistance, parts of South-East Asia have multi-drug resistance), trip length, dosing tolerance, contraindications (pregnancy, psychiatric history, photosensitivity for Doxycycline) and personal preference. See TravelHealthPro country-specific malaria advice for the latest resistance maps.
Yellow Fever certificate (ICVP) — what it covers
The ICVP is recognised by all 196 WHO member states. Brazil, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Guyana, French Guiana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Togo, Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, and parts of Sudan and Uganda require it for entry. Many other countries require it for travellers transiting through endemic areas — including some Asian and Pacific countries — even if the final destination isn't Yellow Fever-risk. We check your full itinerary at consultation to confirm whether the certificate is required and when it must be issued (vaccination must be at least 10 days before arrival in some countries).
Hajj and Umrah travel — Meningitis ACWY requirements
Saudi Arabia mandates Meningitis ACWY vaccination (quadrivalent — Nimenrix or Menveo) for all Hajj and Umrah visa applications. The certificate must be at least 10 days old at arrival and less than 5 years old. We administer ACWY same-day, with the certificate issued on the day. Additional Hajj-recommended vaccines we routinely advise on: seasonal influenza (high transmission in crowded settings), Hep A and B (food and water risk + healthcare contact), Tetanus boosters, and Rabies if planning desert or rural excursions. Polio drops are required for travellers from polio-endemic or wild-poliovirus-affected countries.
NHS vs private — when each makes sense
Some travel vaccines are NHS-eligible via your GP practice: Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio combined, Hepatitis A and Typhoid (for travellers heading to certain destinations). If you have 4+ weeks until travel and your GP has appointments available, that's the cheapest route. But GP availability has tightened — most practices now triage travel-vaccine requests behind acute care and routine reviews, and lead times can be 4+ weeks. Private clinics are faster (same-day appointments routine here), stock private-only jabs the NHS doesn't fund (Yellow Fever, Rabies, Japanese Encephalitis, Cholera, Hajj Meningitis ACWY, Dengue, Chikungunya), and can sequence multiple vaccines into one visit. For mixed cases — say Yellow Fever plus an NHS-eligible Tetanus booster — we can administer everything in one appointment to save a separate GP trip.
What you walk out with
A typical full travel consultation at Essex Clinics takes 20–30 minutes. You leave the same visit with vaccines administered, malaria tablets prescribed and dispensed if needed, a Yellow Fever ICVP certificate if relevant, and a written travel-health summary covering bite-avoidance, food and water safety, altitude advice if applicable, and what to do if you get sick abroad. The written summary is handy if your employer, insurer, or onward travel insurer asks for vaccination proof.
Booking, pricing, and practical details
Booking is online via essexclinics.co.uk/booking or by phone on 01375 641569. Same-day appointments are routinely available with a minimum 2-hour booking notice. Pricing varies by vaccine — we hold a current quote sheet and give you the full figure at consultation; the consultation itself is included in the appointment fee. Pricing changes weekly with supplier costs so we don't publish stale figures.
