Travel vaccinations for Canvey Island residents

Canvey Island is one of South Essex's biggest holiday-travel postcodes — a lot of our Canvey patients are families heading to Spain, Turkey, Greece, Egypt or the Canary Islands. For those destinations the question isn't usually Yellow Fever — it's about ensuring children's routine vaccinations are current (MMR especially), Tetanus boosters for adults who haven't had one in 10+ years, and Hepatitis A for travellers heading to Egypt or anywhere with less-developed food and water infrastructure.

Hassengate Pharmacy is about 10 miles west of Canvey, around 22 minutes by car via the A130 and A1014. Free parking on-site, late opening seven days, every travel vaccine in stock. Families with young children can usually be seen together in one appointment.

Family Mediterranean travel — what often gets missed

MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) coverage in the UK has dipped in recent years, with several measles outbreaks in 2024-2025. Egypt, Turkey and parts of Spain have seen ongoing outbreaks. If a child or unvaccinated adult is heading to those countries we recommend checking MMR status — a single catch-up dose at our clinic is the simplest fix. Tetanus boosters are similarly underrated: most adults haven't had one in 10+ years and a graze with rusty metal abroad is a routine A&E visit overseas. We check both at consultation.

Common travel vaccines in stock

Yellow Fever (Stamaril), Hepatitis A and B (Avaxim, Havrix, Engerix B, Twinrix), Typhoid (Typhim Vi), Rabies (Rabipur), Japanese Encephalitis (Ixiaro), Meningitis ACWY (Nimenrix/Menveo), Cholera oral (Dukoral), Dengue (Qdenga), Chikungunya (Ixchiq), Tick-borne Encephalitis, and routine boosters like Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio and MMR catch-up. All on-site.

Malaria prevention — when it matters and when it doesn't

If you're staying in tourist resorts on the Mediterranean coast malaria isn't a concern. If your itinerary takes you to sub-Saharan Africa, the Indian subcontinent, the Amazon basin or rural South-East Asia, it matters. Our pharmacist is a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber — Malarone, Doxycycline or Mefloquine prescribed in the same appointment, with the right choice based on destination, dosing schedule and any pre-existing conditions. See TravelHealthPro country advice for risk profile.

NHS vs private — practical for holiday travel

For most Mediterranean holidays the only vaccines you might need are NHS-eligible (Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio combined, Hep A and Typhoid for certain destinations) — your GP can administer those free but may not have appointment availability close to your travel date. Private clinics are faster and stock vaccines GPs don't (Yellow Fever, Rabies, Hajj jabs). We're upfront about the full cost at consultation — no surprises.
